From Pledge of Sexual Pleasures to Free Gasoline! Every Surface is Covered: The Eye Sore of Iran's Election Campaign Posters
Politics News, Kodoom.com Editorial
As Iran approaches a parliamentary election, hundreds of reformist candidates and even some current members of the Iranian Parliament are disqualified from running - including Ali Motahari, the son of Ayatollah Motahari, one of the founders of Islamic revolution - by the leader-appointed Guardian Council due to the candidate's views (critical of the Supreme Leader or the Revolutionary Guards Corps). As a result, many reformists and opponents of the regime have boycotted the election. Even the spokesperson for the conservative Guardian Council has foreshadowed a low voter turnout.
Several (qualified) conservative candidates, however, have resorted to creative campaign pledges to attract voters and increase voter turnout. One Ayatollah (Zamani) has printed campaign posters pledging "Halal Satisfaction of Youthful Sexual Urges" as his campaign promise, as well as "mining reform and releasing reservoir water to people!"
Another candidate, in Kohgilouyeh, has been caught offering free gasoline rations to people in exchange for their votes.
In Iran's major cities such as Tehran, Isfahan and Rasht, practically every visible surface is covered with election posters and banners. Walls, doors and sidewalks. Even trees, storefronts, fruit stands, power transformer stations, bakeries and pastry shops are not spared! Eye sores are everywhere. Some examples are shown here.
Iran's conservative Ayatollahs will be certainly watching the turnout in the first major election following a tumultuous year of riots, foreign conflicts and economic paralysis.
