Map shows year women gained voting rights in Iran and other countries
Exactly 100 years ago, thanks to the women's suffrage movement and courage of outspoken progressive women such as Emily Davison, women in the UK won the right to vote. A few other countries preceded England, as seen in the map below: New Zealand (1893), Australia (conditional, excluded aborigines, 1902), Finland (1906), and Norway (conditional, 1907).
Women in US, Russia, Canada, and many European countries such as Germany gained voting rights in the early part of the 20th century.
Iranian women could vote starting in 1963 thanks to a decree by Premier Asadollah Alam and despite opposition by conservative ayatollahs. This came some 29 years after Turkey, 16 years after Pakistan, and five years after Iraq granted voting rights to women. There were earlier but failed efforts to secure women voting rights in Iran such as the 1943 campaign by the communist Toudeh party and the 1953 effort by the nationalist Dr. Moasadegh, who was overthrown by a CIA-US-British-led coup.
In 2011, Saudi Arabia became the world's last country to grant women the right to vote.
