Former Iranian President Warns About the Crisis Ahead
In a meeting with his former cabinet members, Hassan Rouhani, Iran's former reformist President and National Security Chief has recently issued a stern warning about the crisis in Iran. A short translation follows:
"Our main problem is the loss of hope for the future among our citizens. If a country's defenses or counter offences are not strong enough, no amount of tough talk would help. Today we have a need to strengthen our defenses against the joint US, Israel resources. It would be a miscalculation if we think of Israel alone. Regionally, we are also in a crisis in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Iran. The most important security measure in a country is the popular support. Our voter turn out has dropped to 40% in contrast to 60-70% in democracies. We need to find out why our people are distancing themselves from the regime.
During the war with Iraq, once we boosted our anti-aircraft defenses, Iraq stopped its aerial invasions but before that, we were easy victims.
Unfortunately, our "right wing" opponents in Iran share the views of Netanyahu and right wing Israelis in opposing the Nuclear Deal with the US. Netanyahu pushed Russia to delay sales of S-300 air defense to Iran for seven years.
Our leader is not absolutely against negotiations... Why is our system so suppressive to opposing views? Our revolution was about freedom. Today nobody can talk or criticize, where is the freedom we promised? Even our national TV is run by a small suppressive cult [that censors all others].
We have lost more than $100 Billion a year because of our tensions with the US... How can an economy grow without investments, technology and foreign markets. These all need constructive cooperation with the world. Capital is leaving the country at an alarming rate. Only in the two years that we had the Nuclear Agreement with the US our economic growth rose to 8% and inflation dropped below 10%.
Palestinians have told us If Iran's regime collapses, Palestine's resistance will die out."
