Giving Up on Trump, Americans Resort to Congress for Gun Control
News Blog by Kodoom.com, the 2018 US mid-term elections heralded victories not only for women, minorities, some environmental activists (news link) and even Iranian American women candidates (news link), but also for many gun-control advocates.
Gun Violence is on the rise in America. America is approaching one mass shooting, as defined by 4 or more people killed in each episode, for each day of the year. So far in 2018 nearly 40,000 Americans have been killed or injured, a number rivaled only by the number of deaths caused by the opioid drug overdose, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC). While President Trump has declared the opioid crisis a "public health emergency," as of now he has not taken any serious actions on gun violence. So Americans have resorted to the legislative branch for action.
According to a report compiled by CNBC, the incoming 2019 US Congress is shaping up to be dominated by gun control advocates:
- Gun control proponents picked up seats in House midterm races as gun rights advocates lost ground, with 17 newly elected House Democrats who back stricter gun laws, including women: Jennifer Weston, Abigail Spanberger and Elaine Luria in Virgnia who defeated the incumbents backed by the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA).
- More than two dozen gun rights proponents won’t be returning to the next Congress.
- House Democrats expanded the ranks of gun control advocates in their caucus and pledged to to take action on gun control after a recent string of mass shootings, including a late-night assault at a California bar that killed 12 people.
The newly-elected Congress may look into repealing the Dickey Amendment that restricted lawmakers from studying the problem in the first place. The amendment is named after ex-congressman Jay Dickey who was interviewed by National Public Radio.
It appears that the next US Congress is on a collision course with President Trump and NRA-backed politicians on issues related to gun control and gun violence.
