Golshifteh, Shajarian and the Nobel Committee Honor Narges Mohammadi
Iranian human and women rights activist Narges Mohammadi has been honored in her absence at a ceremony in Norway, after winning the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize.
Singers Golshifteh Farahani, Mojgan Shajarian and Angelina Jordan performed in ceremonies honoring Mohammadi:
Narges Mohammadi who has been imprisoned several times, is Deputy Director of the Defenders of Human Rights Centre (DHRC). She was elected as President of the Executive Committee of the National Council of Peace in Iran, a broad coalition against war and for the promotion of human rights. She has campaigned for the abolition of the death penalty in Iran. In a two volume study, called White Torture, she underscores how solitary confinement is indeed an insidious form of torture. She has interviewed many of Iran’s dissidents who have been subjected to solitary confinement. Based on these conversations, she has also produced a documentary. Two years ago, she discussed her work with Darius Rejali and Abbas Milani:
Mohammadi is now again in prison in Tehran, and has not seen her exiled family in nearly a decade. Her daughter says the last time she saw her mother she was nine years old.
The Nobel Peace Prize Forum was also held in Oslo to focus on the fight for human rights and democracy in Iran, with an emphasis on the situation for women:
