Guardian Photographer Captures Iran's Family Tours to War Zones
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com:
British photographer Anthony Micallef accompanies "Passengers of Light" tours, Pilgrimages made by loved ones of those who died in Iran-Iraq war. The tours are supported and organised by Armed forces and militia, which see in the tours an opportunity to spread their doctrine and propaganda.
Every spring, thousands of families, including newly weds, infants and young children, travel to the battle sites of the Iran-Iraq war (1980-88). Many of those who make these pilgrimages – called Rahian-e Noor in Persian (the passengers of light) – lost loved ones in the war, which caused more than half a million deaths on the Iranian side.
Hundreds of buses are chartered from Tehran and the country’s main cities to transport families to the memorials. In the past, several of these buses have crashed or involved in road accidents on route leading to death or injury of several hundred Passengers of Light.
