Iranian Americans Appointed by the Biden Administration

The new Biden administration has appointed several Iranian Americans in different agencies:
Mehrsa Baradaran, born in Urmia (Orumieh) is appointed to lead The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency which oversees 1200 banks with total assets of around $14 trillion, approximately two-thirds of the total in the U.S. banking system, and is charged with enforcing the Fair Housing Act of 1968 and the Community Reinvestment Act. She earned her bachelor's degree cum laude from Brigham Young University and her J.D. degree cum laude from New York University. Baradaran has repeatedly condemned the era of neoliberal deregulation and the consolidation of the banking industry. In 2020, she worked with several presidential candidates including Bernie Sanders, Kristen Gillibrand, and Elizabeth Warren, and since November 2020, Baradaran has been working with the Biden Transition to ensure a racial justice lens throughout their economic policy priorities. Baradaran has three children: " I have taken my babies to work with me, I have worked at home a lot, and like I said before, I get my summers off. However, I do have to travel to conferences, “work” even when I’m not at work, and there is no flexibility about class time."
Judge Afsaneh Ashley Tabaddor has been appointed at US Citizenship and Immigration Services as its top lawyer. She received her B.A., cum laude, from UCLA, and her law degree from UC, Hastings College of the Law. A member of the California bar, Judge Tabaddor was an immigration judge for the U.S. Immigration Court, where she served as a judge in one of the most active courts in the nation. In addition, Judge Tabaddor has served as an adjunct professor with UCLA Law School, USC Chapman, and George Washington Law Schools. Prior to her appointment for the judgeship in 2005, she served for three years as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Central District of California in Los Angeles. Judge Tabaddor is an active member of the Iranian American community, having previously served on the Board of Advisors for the Iranian American Bar Association (IABA) and as a mentor for the Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans (PAAIA). In 2015, The US Department of Justice (DOJ) settled with Tabaddor who challenged the DOJ’s order requiring her to recuse herself from all cases involving Iranian nationals Tabaddor claims the order amounted to racial discrimination and violated her constitutional rights.
Dr. Ali Nouri, a molecular biologist and most recently the President of the Federation of American Scientists, is appointed by The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs. Nouri received his Ph.D. from Princeton University under advisorship of Professor Eric Wieschaus recipient of the Nobel Prize in medicine. Nouri worked as the deputy legislative director to Senator Al Franken (MN) and met his wife, Sally Logan Gibson, an associate in the strategic innovation group at Booz Allen Hamilton, while working in Washington for Senator Jim Webb. Nouri's parents own EZ Storage, a storage facility in Portland, Oregon.
