Iranian-German Lawyer Elected as Anti-Discrimination Representative
According to Frankfurter Rundschau, Dr. Shahram Iranbomy, the 55-year-old member of the Municipal Foreigners' Representation (Kommunalen Ausländervertretung, KAV) in Frankfurt AM, Germany has recently been elected as special representative for anti-discrimination in the KAV. In this function, he would like to eliminate the prejudices and discrimination that citizens experience because of their ethnicity, religion, world view, disability, age, sexual orientation or gender.
Iranbomy who has a doctorate in philosophy and one in law has been active in fighting discrimination since 1982. Through his work as a lawyer, as an Iranian-born immigrant, and a member of the KAV, he has first hand knowledge of unequal treatment and racism: "The goals of my work are to strengthen social cohesion and systematically shape integration," says Iranbomy.
The problem is often that the victims of discrimination often do not even know how to behave in the event of discrimination. They often do not even know where a complaint could be lodged. If, despite all the adversities, a complaint is made about the supervisory authority or a personal visit is made in cases of discrimination, the reports of victims would not be taken seriously enough by the police, judiciary, schools, job centers and employers. Iranbomy therefore calls for a central, independent contact point that those affected and people who experience racism in their environment and in the administration can turn to. Internal ombudsman offices are also useful for people who have experienced or observed racism themselves.
Iranbomy has himself experienced discrimination abroad when the US government denied him an entry visa to attend his son's funeral and burial ceremonies in washington DC without any explanations.
He tells the German paper: "Even if there is just one less case of discrimination, there will be less pain."
