Iranian Official: Republicans asked us not to release US prisoners to Obama
Iranian News Search Engine: Admiral Shamkhani, Iran's Secretary of National Security Council, in a speech given in Yazd today, disclosed that Republicans, through backdoor channels, had offered favors in return for asking Iran not to release or exchange any American prisoners while Obama is still in office. Iran denied such requests and the prisoner swap successfully went ahead last month.
Donald Trump and several other Republican Presidential candidates had criticized Obama for impotency on releasing US hostages in Iran.
In 1980, Iranian hardliners decided - some say through back channel negotiations with Republicans- not to release American hostages until Ronald Reagan became the US President. Iran's pro-diplomacy gesture came too little, too late for Carter and was perhaps the biggest political boon to the Republican party in recent history.
