Meetings Abound in New York: From Zarif, Mogherini to pro-Saudi, pro-Israeli and MKO Meetings

Concurrent with UN speeches in New York, several high level meetings were held to either preserve the Iran Nuclear Deal (despite Trump) or to plan the overthrow of Iranian government and tighter sanctions against Iran. Outside the United Nations building, there were several hundred demonstrators protesting Iranian President Rouhani.

In support of the Iran Nuclear Deal, Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif had a meeting with Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and European Commission Vice-President. They jointly declared that the European Union will set up "a legal entity to facilitate legitimate financial transaction with Iran."

A high level meeting funded and organized by armed group Mujahedin Khalgh Organization (MEK or MKO) was attended by Rudy Giuliani, President Trump's personal lawyer, who advocated for overthrow of Iranian government:

During remarks at the United Against Nuclear Iran Summit, (UANI) President Trump's national security adviser John Bolton and Secretary of State Michael Pompeo gave stern warnings to Iran and iterated US plans to destabilize Iranian government. Bolton called Iran a "murderous regime" and the Nuclear Deal a "disastrous deal." The high-level meeting was attended by high level officials from Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates and Yemen, as well as former pro-Israeli US Senator Joseph Lieberman;

The well-funded UANI group employs several high level diplomats, and political and intelligence officials on its board and staff such as Jeb Bush, Dennis Ross, Bill Richardson, August Hanning and Iranian American Ray Takeyh. United Against Nuclear Iran is partly funded by Las Vegas–based casino magnate and pro-Israeli billionaire Sheldon Adelson.

Adelson, as reported by Connie Bruck in a June 2008 issue of The New Yorker, commented, “I really don’t care what happens to Iran. I am for Israel.” That message stands in sharp contrast to UANI’s claims of supporting human rights in Iran and seeking a diplomatic resolution to the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program.

The Las Vegas Sands CEO also told an audience at Yeshiva University in October 2013 that Obama should launch a pre-emptive nuclear attack on a swath of uninhabited Iranian desert (the first use of a nuclear weapon against another country since the nuclear bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima) and threaten that Iran will be “wiped out” if the country’s leadership doesn’t dismantle their nuclear program.
