Narges Mohammadi From Prison Reports Torture of Young Rioters from Poor Families

Iranian human rights activist, Narges Mohammadi has reported from inside prison her observation of Iranian rioters detained during recent unrest being tortured and kept in solitary confinement in Evin's notorious Section 209. She specifically refers to a young woman in prison who was forced to confess to crimes she did not commit after being dragged by her hair by interrogators. She also reports of a young man shot in his leg, transferred from solitary to medical clinic due to infection and poor care: "A young man from the poor suburb of Islamshahr, The same oppressed class of people whom the Islamic revolutionary government claims to serve and save!"
Iranian authorities have confirmed many of the rioters were poor and unemployed. Official news confirm, for example, that a destitute man who burned banks in Eastern Tehran was also responsible for throwing acid on 40 luxury cars in Tehran's northern wealthy suburbs.
Separately, Iran's Judiciary has reported that most of the detainees have been freed because "only saboteurs will be indicted." Tehran Governor has separately stated some 2021 rioters have been arrested in the province but mostly freed. Also some 216 facilities (banks, gas stations, stores) were burned or damaged in riots, and more security forces injured than rioters.
Narges Mohammadai is the vice president of the Defenders of Human Rights Center, headed by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi. In May 2016, she was sentenced in Tehran to her fifth prison term, this time to 16 years for starting a human rights campaign to abolish death penalty in Iran. In 2014, Mohammadi made a moving speech at the gravesite of Sattar Beheshti, stating, “How is it that the Parliament Members are suggesting a Plan for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, but nobody spoke up two years ago, when an innocent human being by the name of Sattar Beheshti died under torture in the hands of his interrogator?” In January 2019 Ms. Mohammadi (mother of two children who live with her husband now) began a hunger strike, along with the detained British-Iranian citizen Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, in Tehran’s Evin prison, to protest being denied access to medical care.
