Record number of women elected in Iran's Parliamentary elections
Independent Persian News Search Engine, Kodoom.com: In Iran's Parliamentary elections, from the 1234 female nominees, a record 14 were elected and 8 more will compete in the run off elections. In Iran's first post-1979 Revolution Parliament only 4 women won seats (out of 327 total) and in the last Parliament only 9 out of the 288 MPs were women.
People of Tehran elected 8 female MPs (out of the 30 seats for the Metropolitan Tehran), all reformists or moderates with university or graduate level education.
Iranian women are among the most educated in the Middle East. Women were partly responsible for the high voter turn of 65% in Iran's recent elections.
