Role of American and Iranian women in Occupy Wall Street
American women have participated in large numbers in the Occupy Wall Street movement, as evidenced by pictures (some shown here) and reflected in media reports such as the article in the Nation:
But some believe that Iranian women and their brave nonviolent resistance during Iran's green movement partially inspired the Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street movements. In fact, one of the most prominent and largest placards used by participants of Occupy Wall Street is the well known image of a young protesting Iranian woman:
Another connection of Occupy Wall Street to Iran: The three American hikers recently freed from Iran participated in the Occupy Wall Street rallies in Oakland California (pictured below):
Unfortunately, the Oakland rallies turned violent and police arrested and injured several demonstrators including Scott Olsen, 24, an Iraq war veteran who was critically injured (shown in video below).
In response to the Police brutality, there are more demonstrations nationwide and the movement seems to be spreading. The movement's motto, as reflected in their website (link here) is: "Occupy Wall Street is leaderless resistance movement with people of many colors, genders and political persuasions. The one thing we all have in common is that We Are The 99% that will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1%."
