Romney in trouble with arrogant remarks about Americans (leaked video)
Romney is in trouble again with the middle class (majority) American voters. Mother Jones has published a leaked video (see below) from a private fundraiser held on May 17 for a small group of wealthy contributors at the home of private equity mogul Mark Leder - owner of Philadelphia Seventy Sixers and known for multiple girlfriends and hosting his sex parties). In this video the Republican presidential candidate dismisses nearly half of Americans as freeloaders who pay no taxes, who don't assume responsibility for their lives, and who think government should take care of them. Romney goes on: "My job is is not to worry about those people."
Romney's critics point out that the majority of the 47% of Americans who do not pay income taxes in fact live in Republican-leaning states which voted for John McCain and George Bush and NOT for Obama! Furthermore, majority of the 47% do still pay payroll taxes and cannot be unfairly characterized as "not paying taxes" or as freeloaders.
Also in the video, responding to a question about the "Palestinian problem," Romney told attendees of this $50,000-a-plate dinner peace in the Middle East is not possible and a Palestinian state is not feasible, telling donors that Palestinians have "no interest whatsoever in establishing peace and that the pathway to peace is almost unthinkable to accomplish."
The controversial statements created large scale negative publicity for him, and Romney's campaign had to convene a late-night press conference to address the controversial statements. While Romney, in his usual unapologetic style, stood by his "off the cuff" comments, he conceded that they were "not elegantly stated."
Earlier this week, Romney's comments about middle class also caused him some trouble and reinforced his opponents' view that he is out of touch with ordinary people in America. During an interview on Friday on ABC's "Good Morning America" Mitt Romney repeated his pledge to reduce taxes on middle-income Americans, those who make $200,000 to $250,000 a year!
The Census Bureau reported this week that the median household income — the midpoint for the nation — is about $50,000!
