Russia's Position on a Potential Iran-Israel War
Russian President Vladimir Putin, during BRICS 2024 summit, in response to a question about Russia's stance on Middle East tensions (Minute marker 42), confirmed his determination not to let the conflict to "spill over" and to ensure reduction of tensions in the Middle East. But Putin refused to explicitly declare his support for Iran in the case of an Israeli or Saudi attack. He said he is careful because his words could be "misinterpreted." It appears that Putin was reluctant to upset Russia's friends in Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Israel.
Referencing Putin's statements, however, exiled Iranian political analysts Mojtaba Vahedi quotes an Iranian MP to point out to a history of Russia's delays or refusals in keeping promises to support Iran's transportation, nuclear and defense industries. He claims Russia will benefit from dragging Iran into a war with Israel and from keeping Iran permanently dependent on Russia, while distracting the world's attention and US resources away from Ukraine and Russia:
