These Iranian American, Muslim and Immigrant Women Made History in US Elections
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: Democrat women, including several Iranian Americans (see list of nominees HERE), muslims and immigrants, blew a major defeat to President Trump's party in federal, state and local elections across the US. According to NPR, after yesterday's elections, a record number of women will serve in Congress come January 2019, at least 117 up from the current 107. Led by female candidates, Democrats also picked several governor, state and local seats from Republicans, including 12 in Texas.
In Orlando, Florida, Anna Eskamani was elected to Florida House District 47 becoming first elected Iranian-American to hold any elected office in the Sunshine state. Eskamani ran against Republican Stockton Reeves to replace Rep. Mike Miller in what was described as a hotly-contested race. District 47 includes Orlando and Winter Park.
In New York State Senate race, Iranian American town councilwoman Anna Kaplan (Democrat) defeated state Senator Elaine Phillips (Republican) in a tight race for state Senate District 7 on Tuesday night, unseating the one-term state Senator to help cede full state government control to Democrats.
In the state of Georgia, Zahra (sheikh-ol-Islam) Karinshak, a distinguished military veteran and a former federal prosecutor ran an impressive campaign to win Georgia State Senate’s 48th District seat and became the first Iranian American elected to a Georgia state legislature.
In North Carolina, Sam Hamadani, a former public defender and staffer for VP Biden and the first Iranian American judge in the state, ran unopposed to keep her seat for the Wake County District Court.
In the city of Lake Forest, California, Iranian American Neeki Moatazedi, only a three-year resident with no record of any civic involvement in the city, won the seat in District 2 with 57.9% of the votes, despite her opponents' smear campaigns showing her in bikini (story link). A news commentary on Lake Forest Patch claims Neeki and other winners are Republican-backed and plan to pave the way for developer Toll Brothers to build 800 homes on the Nakase Brothers Nursery property.
In New York's 14th congressional district, the progressive Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 29, has made history in the United States as the youngest woman ever elected to Congress, championing her working class and Puerto Rican roots. She is the daughter of a cleaner and a father who died in his 40s. She will advocates free healthcare and education for all.
Palestinian-American Rashida Tlaib and Somali-American Ilhan Omar have also become the first Muslim women elected to US Congress. Tlaib took Michigan's 13th congressional district in a race in which she was the sole major party candidate. Omar won Minnesota's strongly Democratic fifth congressional district, replacing the first Muslim congressman, Keith Ellison, who vacated his seat to run in the state's attorney general race.
Also, Democrats Sharice Davids (Kansas) and Deb Haaland (New Mexico) became the first ever Native American women elected to US Congress. Davids is a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation and Haaland is an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Laguna, according to their respective campaigns.
In the all-important gubernatorial races, despite reports of widespread voter suppression against black, minority, hispanic and poor voters in the states of Georgia and Florida, Democrats, led by female candidates, unseated 7 Republican governors. The states of Michigan, New Mexico, Kansas, and Maine now have Democrat women governors.
