This US Presidential Candidate is Against War with Iran and by Some Accounts A Winner of Democratic Debate
Independent aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: On Thursday GoogleTrends showed Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) as the most-searched candidate of Wednesday night's Democratic debate after entering the event as a relative unknown. While the rest of the candidates at the debate focused on socialist economic policies, the articulate meditative Gabbard who is often impressively composed and calm was focused on the costs of war and trying to keep the country out of war with Iran, according to Reason. Douglas MacKinnon, a former White House and Pentagon official calls Gabbard now the biggest threat to Trump in 2020.
When asked whether she would rejoin the 2015 Iran nuclear deal — first negotiated by the Obama administration and withdrawn from by President Donald Trump — Gabbard gave an unequivocal YES, while warning about the dire consequences of war: "War with Iran would be worse than war with Iraq," said Gabbard, an Iraq War veteran. "Donald Trump and his chickenhawk cabinet—Mike Pompeo, John Bolton, and others—are creating a situation where a spark would light a war with Iran. Trump needs to get back into the Iran deal, swallow his pride, and put America first."
Gabbard's Legislative Victory to Minimize Risk of War with Iran:
With ongoing threats by the Trump Administration to use military force against Iran, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02) secured two separate provisions in the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act, passed by the House Armed Services Committee, ensuring that no measure in the bill may be used as an authorization for the use of military force against either Iran or Venezuela.
She also reintroduced the No More Presidential Wars resolution which would prohibit the President from starting a war without Congressional authorization. It defines Presidential wars not declared by Congress under Article I, section 8, clause 11 (Declare War Clause) as impeachable "high crimes and misdemeanors."
Who is Tulsi Gabbard:
The articulate meditative anti-war politician who is impressively composed and calm, has seen wars first hand. She served two tours of duty in the Middle East and continues her service as a Major in the Army National Guard. But she is not a regular warrior but a poet/philosopher warrior. She is a strong environmental advocate, a vegetarian yogi, a surfer, a martial arts athlete and a gardener.
In a recent speech titled "Build, Don't Bomb: A New American Foreign Policy" Gabbard outlined her views (video below) at Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs in a session with Stephen Kinzer, the the author of "All the Shah's Men: An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror" documenting, in details, how the CIA overthrew Iran's nationalist government in 1953. In another interview, she warns against overthrowing governments of Venezuela and Iran by US force which would result in thousands of lives lost and trillions wasted.
Tulsi Gabbard was elected to the Hawaii State Legislature in 2002 when she was just 21 years old, becoming the youngest person ever elected in the state. A year later, she joined the Hawai‘i Army National Guard.
Tulsi Gabbard continues her service as a Major in the Army National Guard. Tulsi’s 2005 deployment was a 12-month tour at Logistical Support Area Anaconda in Iraq, where she served in a field medical unit as a specialist with a 29th Support Battalion medical company. She was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal at the end of this tour.
But Gabbard's stances have been occasionally controversial and contradictory. In 2015, she spoke at a conference of Christians United for Israel – an organization that strongly opposes Palestinian statehood and supports Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.
Also, unlike many progressive Democrats, Gabbard didn’t skip Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech before the U.S. Congress in March 2015, in the midst of that year’s Israeli election. Sen. Bernie Sanders, whom Gabbard later strongly endorsed in the Democratic primary, didn’t attend the speech, accusing Netanyahu and Republicans in Congress of a “very bad” political stunt.
