Trump Issues Iran a Warning but also an Open Invitation to Join Regional Peace Accord
In his speech today to the Israeli Knesset on the occasion of Gaza and Abraham peace accords, following Hamas's release of 20 Israeli prisoners, Trump extended an olive branch to Iranian leader: "As you know, this is not said out of weakness, it's not weakness, but I'm going to say this—we are ready when you are and it will be the best decision that Iran has ever made." Trump also thanked Netanyahu, Arab leaders, Witkoff and his pro-Israel Jewish son-law. In his speech, which was briefly disrupted by protest at one point (minute 7), Trump condemned Iran as a "state sponsor of terror," but also emphasized US has no hostility toward Iranian people ("I know a lot of Iranians in the United States, a good people") and called for the regime to "renounce terrorism, quit funding their militant proxies, and finally recognize Israel's right to exist." He also implied the key to peace with Iran is through Russia. While Trump's remarks about terminating the nuclear deal and bombing Iran's nuclear facilities elicited strong applause, his olive branch and offer of peace to Iran did not receive much applause from members of the Israeli Knesset. Other parts of Trump speech about Iran:
"Iran was about two months from achieving a nuclear weapon before the attacks... We took a big cloud off the Middle East, and off of Israel...The JCPOA [Iran nuclear deal] was a disastrous deal... I terminated the Iran nuclear deal and I was very proud to do it .. Neither the United States nor Israel bear the people of Iran any hostility.. The hand of friendship and cooperation is open [to Iran]... We are ready when you are, and it will be the best decision that Iran has ever made... I'm telling you, they want to make a deal... That’s all I do in my life, I make deals.. Wouldn’t it be nice [to strike a peace deal with Iran]? I think they’re tired. They want to survive... But first we gotta get Russia done.. Iran is not restarting its nuclear program—the last thing they want to do is start digging holes again in mountains that just got blown up...From Gaza to Iran… hatred has brought nothing but suffering.. There’s nothing that would do more good for this part of the world than for Iran’s leaders to .. quit funding their militant proxies and finally recognize Israel’s right to exist... The hand of friendship and cooperation is open. I'm telling you, they (Iran) want to make a deal... it would be great if we could make a deal."
While applauding Trump's role in forging a regional peace accord, US media and commentators have also criticized his omission of Palestinian suffering and casualties (over 67,000 reported).
In his speech, While congratulating Netanyahu as a great war-time leader, Trump also joked about difficulties of working with Netanyahu and his abrasive personality. Trump also quipped he is not sure whether Miriam Adelson's first allegiance is to Israel or to the US! Adelson, with $60 billion in assets, is a major donor to Trump campaign and behind U.S. recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, and perhaps later annexation by Israel.
