US Media Quote Young Iranian Americans on Israel Palestine Conflict
Last week, young Iranian American activists were quoted in the US media with opoosing views on the Israel-Palestine conflict. On the pro-Palestinian side, Google software engineer Mohammad Khatami (apparently an Iranian American), was arrested in New York for protesting Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion Google contract to provide cloud computing services to the Israeli military. Khatami was later fired by Google along with 27 others for voicing their concern. Khatami has criticized the censorship in an interview with Amy Goodman of Democracy Now: “Google execs basically chose to arrest workers for speaking out against the use of our technology to power the first AI-powered genocide!"
Reportedly, there were also Iranian American students and activists among those arrested at Columbia University in New York protesting "Israel's genocide in Gaza." The students have called the action by the University and Police Department a violation of free speech and first amendment rights.
Separately, pro-Zionism Iranian American Brandon Tavakoli, speaking for the pro-Israeli group Trojans for Israel (shown in the picture and video), was among those who pressured the The University of Southern California (USC) to ban 2024's valedictorian, Asna Tabassum, from speaking as the valedictorian at the upcoming commencement ceremony because of her pro-Palestinian views which Tavakoli called antisemitic. Other USC students have protested across the campus against the ‘silencing’ of valedictorian with cancellation of speech.
