In Pictures: Iran's Port with Natural Beauty and Strategic Importance
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: Chabahar, meaning "four springs" in Persian language (due to its relatively moderate climate), is a strategic port in Sistan and Baluchestan Province connecting Iran to Indian Ocean through Gulf of Oman.
Chabahar's diverse geological and marine landscape which connects Iranian deserts to warm ocean waters creates natural wonders. For example, Chabahar is one of the few places in the world you can witness the magical night glow emitted by Bioluminescent phytoplanktons.
Chabahar is a free port (Free Trade Zone) and Iran's southernmost city. India, Iran and Afghanistan now have a pact in place to establish a Transit and Transport Corridor among the three countries using Chabahar. India is helping develop the Chabahar Port, which will give it access to the oil and gas resources in Iran and the Central Asian states.
Foreign Minister Zarif has called the port a regional security and economic hub connecting Iran, Pakistan, India, China and Afghanistan. In December, a suicide attacker targeted a police post in Chabahar.
Chabahar is situated on the Makran Coast of the Sistan and Baluchestan province of Iran and is believed to have gone through several abrupt geological and ecological changes.
According to new research, Chabahar's relative sea level has dropped by up to 15 meters over the past 4800 years possibly related to tectonic uplift across the coastal Makran. Other recent investigations provide evidence of a major flash-flood affecting the Chabahar Bay region caused by storms and associated flash flood of AD 1842.
The overwhelming majority of the city's inhabitants are ethnic Baluch of Iran, who speak their native Baluchi language in addition to Persian. Many local residents rely on fishing and sea trade.
The area's natural beauty and geologic diversity makes it an attractive target for tourism yet better infrastructure, less restrictive religious rules and a peaceful foreign policy will be helpful to expand this market.
