Shervin Hajipour in Trouble Again After New Protest Song Goes Viral
Young Iranian singer-songwriter Shervin Hajipour (or Haji Aghapour) who was blacklisted and arrested (and released on bail) in 2022 after his single "Baraye" (For the sake of) became the anthem of the "Woman, life, freedom" protest movement in Iran (following the death of Mahsa Amini who defied mandatory head scarf for women), is in trouble again for his new song "Ashghal" (garbage).
The Islamic judiciary has warned Shervin again after his new song (Asghal) has gone viral since last week. The protest song is about a young outspoken person who is made to feel like trash (the title of the song) by the authorities and even by his well-connected friends. When he is arrested for expressing his views, nobody is even willing to bail him out. Yet, he says he WILL remain in his motherland and will build it again back to its glory days because his heart and memories belong to that land.
In 2023, Shervin won the first Grammy Award for Best Song for Social Change at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards for "Baraye". Shervin wrote “Baraye” (For the sake of) with the words of fellow Iranians, who had gone online to list the ways their lives had become intolerable. The posts appear on the screen as he sings.
Born in Babolsar, Shervin began posting covers to his social media in late 2018. After auditioning in "Asr Jadid" (New Era) television show in March 2019, he released the "Shayad Behesht" (maybe paradise) song as his debut single on all platforms and gained recognition among the younger Iranian generation. Hajipour rose to fame after the release of his "Baraye" and "Women, Life, Freedom" movement. In 2023, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
