Cursing of Ayatollah's dead Grandson and Girlfriend in Social Media
Last Monday Iranian news sources (Persian link) reported two separate deadly car accidents on the streets of Tehran both involving luxury cars costing nearly 1 Billion toomans in local currency (around $300000 US). Deadly Traffic accidents are common in Iran but these accidents prompted a large unprecedented volume of angry social media comments in the form of cursing the deceased, profanities and Schadenfreude.
Most angry comments were directed to the Instagram page of Parivash, a sexy-looking young rebellious girl who died while driving a yellow Porsche owned by his (deceased) boyfriend, Mr. Rabanni, a grandson of an influential ayatollah who was part of The Leadership Selection Experts Council, the most conservative body of clerics in Iran imposing strict religious rules and morality on the society.
Many of the 40,000 angry comments were by people who vented out at the snobbery and immodesty of the Iranian elite and those who are well-connected to the powerful Ayatollahs: "Show-offs deserve death!" comments Sara, "The New Rich buy expensive cars for their spoiled children, who get drunk and crash their car, die or kill others!" comments another Instagram user.
There were a few nicer comments wishing peace for the souls of the deceased.
Naser Ghasemzadeh, the Iranian psychologist in charge of The Association of Social Mental Health blames the anger and apathy towards the deceased on the widening income gap and gross wealth disparity in the Iranian society. He believes the suppression of human emotions and physical needs (caused by censorship, strict morality codes, etc.) will result in a cold-hearted indifferent society which reacts with extreme apathy and cynicism towards the elite.
