Norwegians weary of alcohol, debauchery and outdoor sex during Russ
Today marked the end of Russefeiring in which Norwegian students celebrate end of high school with an "incomparable" debauched blowout.
Known simply as "Russ," the celebration sees students tour the country in lavish party buses, which often cost (the parents!) up to $50,000 to buy or rent out.
As the weeks of debauchery go on, students are forced to compete in a number of bizarre and risky challenges, ranging from sleeping in trees to breaking into your teacher’s house and drunken unprotected sexual acts outdoors. In recent years, police have become increasingly concerned with violence, incidents of sexual assault, property damage and traffic accidents during Russefeiring.
In 2017, Norway became the first Scandinavian country to decriminalize drugs.
This year The Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA) urged students to refrain from getting intimate on public roads and squares (roundabouts): "Everyone knows that it is a traffic hazard for pedestrians to be in and around roundabouts!"
NPRA’s message also made mention of a challenge involving a naked run over the 1.4 kilometre long Mjøsbrua bridge that crosses Lake Mjøsa: "It is probably not dangerous for a runner to be without clothes on the bridge, but people driving could get such a surprise if they see naked people on the bridge, they might forget they are driving!"
