Saleh Ghasemi, Head of Iran's Population Studies Center, has shared recent statistics on Iranians in diaspora, including asylees, refugees, immigrants, exiled, expats.
According to Ghasemi, out of the world's 260 million immigrants (who live in countries that are not their birthplaces), 9% are asylees or refugees and the rest are immigration by choice. There are some four million Iranian-born immigrants in the world, with 47% living in North America, 29% in Europe, 14% in Africa and Middle East, and 10% in Asia and Australia.
The U.S. is host to the largest number of Iranian expats, followed by Qatar, Canada, Kuwait and Germany.
Ghasemi also said that some 41% of Iranian students abroad have shown willingness to return to Iran but 59% are reluctant or unsure.
The top countries sending immigrants to Iran are Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Azerbaijan and Turkey. Only 5% of immigrants to Iran have higher education in contrast to the 55% of Iranian expats who have higher education and college degrees.
