Hijab Rebellion: Fed Up, Group of Girls Defy Head Cover Rules in Shiraz
For the first time in Iran, a large group of young girls in the city of Shiraz have participated in an act of group rebellion against mandatory head cover laws by removing their scarves during a public skating meetup.
Iran's theocratic government is one of the few in the world that mandates head cover (Islamic Hijab) for women in public. Boys and girls are also not supposed to publicly show affections or intermingle unless they are married. The incident in Shiraz was in defiance to all these strict rules.
Several organizers of the skating meet up have been arrested. An official with the Office of Social and Cultural Affairs in Fars Province told reporters that The Headquarters for Chastity and Hijab is now in charge of ensuring such abnormal defiance does not happen again.
Ebrahim Azizi, MP from Shiraz and Zarghan also urged The Headquarters to Promote Good and Inhibit Vice to act with a sense of urgency and long-term strategic plans to curb the widespread defiance of modesty rules.
Many of Iran's top female athletes, scientists, engineers, artists and chess players have immigrated and sought asylum in other countries without theocratic governments and strict laws.
Every year, Iranian tourists and expatriates also spend billions of dollars in countries without mandatory Hijab laws like Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Malaysia and Cyprus.
