How Iceland and Spain Lead Movements in Gender Equality (video)
More than 5 million women today launched the first nationwide women’s strike in Spain’s history to mark International Women’s Day. Chanting, banging pots and pans, and refusing to work for 24 hours, women of Spain demanded respect and attention: "If we stop, the world stops." According to Democracy Now, supporters include the female mayors of Barcelona and Madrid.
Separately, Iceland, lauded as the world leader in gender parity, is reaping the harvest of a decades-long struggle to give women a fairer deal. Iceland has topped the World Economic Forum’s report on gender parity for nine consecutive years. Euronews reporter takes people on a journey through Icelandic society to discover the secret ingredients that give the country a lead in the fight for gender equality (video shown below):
In America, The League of Women Voters was founded in 1920 during the convention of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. The convention was held just six months before the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, giving women the right to vote after a 72-year struggle. Today, the League of Women Voters has grown to one of the largest nonpartisan organizations molding political leaders, shaping public policy and promoting informed citizen participation at all levels of government. They rely on membership donations to continue their powerful initiatives such as redistricting, which scored a recent victory in Pennsylvania Supreme Court blocking and reversing statewide partisan gerrymandering.
