In Pictures: Iranian Towns Submerged, New Victims of Global Warming?
Society Blog, Kodoom.com Editorial:
Some 40 years after their last war started, Iranians are now facing a new formidable battle against global warming! Residents of Khuzistan are building levees in the same areas in which they built sandbag dykes to counter invasion of the Iraqi army some 40 years ago, except this time sandbags are to counter invasion of floodwater! and Iraqis are helping Iranians in building or plugging breached levees!
Possibly caused by global warming and climate change patterns, a terrible series of unprecedented flash floods have hit 25 of Iran's 31 provinces, causing widespread devastation and destruction. The death toll has surpassed 70 with the potential of more loss of life. Dams in some areas are about to break and thousands have been displaced seeking shelter in safer areas. Several US-based charitable organizations are collecting donations (News Link) to help Iranians with urgent supplies of fresh water, food, and shelter.
A recent study of future climate in Iran published in Nature depicts a grim picture concerning more frequent extreme wet and dry periods, more extended periods of extremely hot temperatures, and higher frequency of floods across the country.
Several towns and cities in Western and Northern provinces are still partially submerged (such as Poldokhtar, Mamoolan and Ahvaz). Connecting roads to several towns and villages have been all washed away and many people are temporarily living inside train wagons.
Five districts in Ahvaz, one of Iran's largest cities, have been evacuated. The Dez and Karkheh rivers have merged for the first time in recent history.
The following images depict some areas impacted by recent floods in Khuzistan and Lorestan provinces:
