In Pictures: Tehran Homeless Shelters Stay Open 24 Hours During Frigid Weather
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: With the arrival of a massive cold front in Iran, Tehran homeless shelters are now open 24 hours to host the homeless.
Some 16 GarmKhaneh (literally meaning Warm Houses in Persian language) in Tehran, managed by the City Council, can host up to 5000 homeless, according to a report by IRNA. A large number of homeless are drug addicts often infected with AIDS, Hepatitis and other illnesses.
There is little information about the homeless in Iran. According to a report published in The Guardian, Iranian officials say there are around 15,000 homeless people in Tehran and its suburbs, including 5,000 women. However, experts believe the number of homeless people is at least twice that figure.
In 2016, https://www.cbsnews.com/news/pictures-homeless-sleeping-in-empty-graves-tehran-shocks-iran/ pictures of Tehran's destitute homeless using dug up graves in Tehran cemetery as temporary overnight shelter shocked many Iranians.
Pictures here are from Iranian news agencies depicting some of Tehran's Men's or women's shelters, sometimes also called Saman Sara (meaning Habitat in Persian).
