Iran Experiences a Drastic Drop in Fertility Rates
According to Iran's Strategic Population Studies Center, the country's population growth rate has reached a historic low of 0.7%. The country's population is aging fast too with 11% of the population now 60 years and older.
Birth rates have dropped from six to 1.6 per woman in just 30 years, a record reduction in fertility and birth rate in the world.
Iran's conservative theocratic government has been encouraging marriages and rewarding families with babies. Despite these efforts, young people are reluctant to marry or have children possibly due to abject economic conditions and high prevalence of infidelity in the age of social media and short-term or open relations. Gender re-identification seems to be also impacting marriage and fertility rates.
