Iranian animal protection society shut down, 4 kittens left to die
Abdolreza Bagheri, the public relations manager at Iranian Animal Protection (Humane) Society, has reported that government officials shut down Society's office on Tuesday despite Society's valid license and permit. Four kittens were left behind in the locked down office and no body is allowed to enter the premises.
Bagheri believes the closure may be related to the recent religious decree by a conservative Ayatollah (Makarem Shirzai) forbidding public announcements, ads and transactions related to pets, pet stores and pet supplies.
Islamic fundamentalists consider dogs as "unclean" for inside a residence, and have publicly voiced disappointment in the increasing trend of pet ownership among wealthy Iranian households.
