Iranian clergyman burned to death in a shrine
In an unprecedented development, Mehdi Asnavandi, an Iranian cleric has been burned to death after being tied to a holy shrine in the town of Varamin (suburb of Tehran) by unidentified attackers with unknown motives.
Religious shrines and their guardian clerics have historically been respected in Iran due to their spiritual position. In recent years, however, this position of spiritual neutrality has been undermined by increasing involvement of religious centers and figures in political and economic activities.
