Iranian youth: Masters of double life (Pictures)
The 1989 crack down on liberal reforms in Iran undoubtedly led Iranian youth to crawl into underground scenes. Much of Iran’s urban youth are living a double life today, caught in the middle of a culture clash between the East and the West.
CNN recently documented this double life through the lens of Iranian-German photojournalist Kaveh Rostamkhani, who between 2012 and 2013, gained access to the private lives of middle-class Iranian youth. A selection of these candid images are presented here.
Although resigned to the rules of the Islamic republic and small allowances in the system - that permits girls to get away with smoking a water pipe, or a couple to hold hands in the quiet hills overlooking Tehran - behind the walls of private complexes, young men and women in Tehran smoke, drink and dance more as a form of individual expression than an outright collective defiance against conservative authorities.
