Police and Clergymen Targeted in Iran

In what appears to be targeted assassinations and ambushes, several Iranian clergymen (Islamic clerics) and police officers have been killed or injured across the country.
In the mausoleum of Imam Reza, a holy shia shrine in the city of Mashhad, a man killed two and injured three other clergymen. The lone assailant was reported to be from Afghanistan so Iran's conservative publications accused America for trying to wage a denominational rift between Shia and Sunni muslims in Iran and Afghanistan.
A few days earlier, not far from Mashhad, two Islamic seminary students were killed by gunmen in Gonbad Kavus.
In recent months, gunmen have also targeted or clashed with policemen in several cities and with border patrol agents in the Sistan Province.
The identity of attackers is often not disclosed so it is not known if the wave of hit jobs are organized or random acts of vengeance by local renegades or crime gangs (mafia).
In recent years, gun violence, hostage and kidnap situations, and armed robberies of jewelry stores have also been on the rise in Iran.
