Prominent Iranian German Lawyer Guarded by Police
Prominent German-Iranian attorney and human rights activist, Dr. Seyed Shahram Iranbomy has been the center of attention in German media after receiving death threats for defending a young French footballer (of a Muslim Moroccan family). According to BILD, his new minor-aged client, the Moroccan player (16) of the French football club FC Metz was arrested following a brawl after which a 15-year old German footballer died.
Iranbomy says he was bombarded by messages on cell phones, telephones and by email, including one with the words 'you die!' There have also been hateful and racist messages sent to Iranbomy, leading to German Police Unit guarding him.
The violent brawl happened between players of FC Metz and JFC Berlin after their match in the international youth tournament "Germany Cup" in Frankfurt-Eckenheim. The 15-year-old JFC Berlin footballer (Paul P.) suffered life-threatening brain injuries and died in the hospital.
Iranbomy, a 56-year-old member of the Municipal Foreigners' Representation (Kommunalen Ausländervertretung, KAV) in Frankfurt, Germany was recently elected as special representative for anti-discrimination in the KAV. In this function, he would like to eliminate the prejudices and discrimination that citizens experience because of their ethnicity, religion, world view, disability, age, sexual orientation or gender.
Iranbomy who has a doctorate in philosophy and another in law has been active in fighting discrimination since 1982. Through his work as a lawyer, as an Iranian-born immigrant, and a member of the KAV, he has first hand knowledge of unequal treatment and racism: "The goals of my work are to strengthen social cohesion and systematically shape integration," says Iranbomy.
Iranbomy has himself experienced discrimination abroad when the US government denied him an entry visa to attend his son's funeral and burial ceremonies in Washington DC without any explanations.
