Sharp increase in divorce rate in Iran alarms authorities
One third of marriages now result in divorce, according to recent numbers disclosed by Sadegh Akbari, the Deputy to the Iranian Youth Organization. Number of registered divorce cases increased by 8% last year but number of marriages remained steady. Recently Mohammad Nazemi Ardakani, the Head of Iranian National Registry, had warned local authorities that disclosing divorce statistics, because they differ between cities and rural areas, will result in "agitation of people's minds."
Poverty, forced and arranged marriages, sexual dissatisfaction, and increasingly dishonest lifestyles in Iran are believed to cause dysfunctional marriages. Some school districts in Iran have added "Islamic husband search" to their pre-university curricula.
