Trump's Son-in-Law Joins Kardashian, Jones and Gabbard to Bring Hope to Overcrowded American Prisons
America spends more on its prison system than it does on public schools according to a recent report but freedom came Friday for more than 3,000 prisoners in the United States. They were released from prisons and halfway houses across the country under the First Step Act signed into law by Trump last year. To the shock of many, Trump gave this law not only his signature but his full, vocal and enthusiastic support!
The law which will roll back provisions of the 1994 Clinton-led Crime Law which devastated many African American communities with harsh sentences. The law was advocated by an unlikely group of conservative and liberal allies. Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, CNN host and former Obama administration official Van Jones, celebrities like Alyssa Milano and Kim Kardashian West, and progressive members of Congress such as Tulsi Gabbard (now a presidential candidate against war with Iran).
Americans account for 4.4 percent of the global population, but 22 percent of the world’s prison population caused by an incarceration rate that has tripled over the past three decades. California, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Rhode Island are the top states spending more on prisons than education. California spends $8.6 billion a year on its prison system, more than any other state, averaging $64,642 per inmate. It’s also the state with the biggest gap between education and prison spending, paying just $11,495 per student for a difference of $53,146.
