Video: An 11 Year Old Bride Sold for $1100 to 90 Year Old Bridegroom!

Kodoom.com, Independent Iran-related News Aggregator: Iranian news agencies have quoted Welfare Office Director in Bushehr about an 11 year old who was forced by her immigrant parents in the town of Dashtestan to marry a 90 year old man in exchange for 21 million toomans (about $1100 US).
Officials point out both the bride and bridegroom families are immigrants to Iran, and the Welfare Office has requested the Judiciary and Immigration Office to intervene.
Undergage marriage of girls has been a contentious issue in Iran. Conservative religious clerics believe marriage for girls can happen as early as puberty age (of around 10). Iran's (Islamic) civil code states that the marriage of girls under the age of 13 and boys under the age of 15 must be with the parent's permission, in the child's interest and authorised by the court but reformists have tried to pass legislation to ban marriage of girls under 15 years of age. The UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Iran reports that about 40,635 marriages (about 3%) of girls under 15 years of age were registered between 2012 and 2013, of which more than 8,000 involved men who were at least ten years older.
