Women in Iran's remote Province win record breaking seats in election

Independent aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: Tehran may be known as Iran's most modern city but when it comes to civic engagement, many Iranians are now looking up to women of Sistan, a remote southeastern Province, in which a record number of 415 women won seats in 2017 municipal elections, a 125% jump from 4 years ago.
In one village (Afzalabad of Poshtkooh) all 10 candidates for the City Council were women.

Under Rohani, 70 women in Sistan have assumed key positions including Deputy Governor, Mayor and County Chair. One woman, Homeira Rigi, the County Chair for Ghasr Ghand is also a mother and a professional physical therapist.

President Rohani won re-election in Sistan with 73% of the votes, vs. his national poll average of 57%.

Neighboring Pakistan, Sistan is Iran's impoverished southeastern province with a large population of Sunni minority and a hot bed of cross-border terrorists, smugglers and rebels. Sistan's senior Sunni cleric had endorsed Rohani's bid for re-election.
In some other Iranian provinces such as Fars, women voted in higher numbers than men in Friday's election.
