First ever Olympics medal for an American Muslim athlete with Hijab
Ibtihaj Muhammad just made history as she became the first ever Muslim American athlete with Hijab (Muslim head cover and modest outfit) to win an Olympics medal - Bronze in Team Sabre vs. Italy in 2016 Olympics in Rio.
Americans hold their Constitution's first amendment on freedom of religion sacred. Yet Muhammad, who was born and raised in a middle class family in New Jersey, still faces negative stereotypes and says she gave Michelle Obama a fencing lesson, just two weeks after being asked in the street if she was going to blow something up!
"I’m hopeful that, in my efforts to represent our country well as an athlete — that they change the rhetoric around how people think and perceive the Muslim community," says the athlete and three-time NCAA All-American from Duke University.
Mohammad is not the only female Muslim in US Olympics team who won medals. Delilah Muhammad (Pictured below, winner of Gold in women's 400 m hurdles) and Nia Ali (winner of Silver in women's 100 m hurdles) also won medals although they did not wear the Islamic Hijab.
