Iranian fans in Australia: Images censored on TV
Although The Guardian reports that exiled Iranian football fans in Australia have set new standards in cheering for their national team during the Asian Cup games, Iran's state-run TV continues to censor the images of the cheering fans in broadcasts inside Iran. The improper Hijab (women's headscarf or body cover) is considered immodest by Iran's Islamic TV standards. Some of these (censored) images are shown here.
According to The Guardian: "The phenomenal Iranian support. As they did in Melbourne for Iran’s opening game, the Persian community has come out in droves to support Team Meli in Sydney. Sitting in the stadium you’d be mistaken for thinking this was an Iranian home game – the crowd of 22,672 is the tournament’s best for a non-Socceroos game; there may have been four goals scored at this venue in front of more than 50,000 Aussie fans on Tuesday night, but the decibel level following Azmoun’s winner was even higher."
The immigrant Iranian population in Australia consists mainly of Bahaii's (religious minority persecuted inside Iran) and Muslims. Despite religious or political differences, many fans traveled long distances to cheer for Iran's national team, which, after defeating Qatar, advanced to Quarterfinals. Some fans also used the opportunity to flaunt their luxury cars (many Iranians are known for their love of Mercedes) and new iPhones.
