America's Top Chess Grandmaster Marries Iranian Woman Grandmaster
Hikaru Nakamura, the world's number-two chess grandmaster has confirmed that he married Iranian-born Woman Grandmaster (WGM) Atousa Pourkashiyan.
35-year-old Pourkashiyan is a seven-time Iranian women's champion. She made her debut for the Iranian national team as a 11-year-old in 2000, and has played a total of nine Olympiads, six of them on board one. Following strict dress-code restrictions and mandatory head scarf rules imposed on Iranian women chess players, she moved to the U.S. and officially changed federations in December 2022 to represent the U.S. She was in the news alongside Sarasadat Khademalsharieh (another Iranian woman Grandmaster seen on the right side of the picture) competing at the World Rapid and Blitz Championship 2022, without the head scarf (hijab) mandated by the Iranian government, thus joining the Mahsa Amini protests (woman, Life, Freedom movement) internationally.
Pourkashiyan's current FIDE rating is 2305, making her the eighth highest-rated woman in the country.
Nakamura is now headed for the FIDE World Cup which starts in Baku, Azerbaijan on July 30. until August 21.
