Belgium's popular football team Charleroi (Royal Charleroi Sporting Club) scored a critical victory this week in Pro League against Sint Truiden thanks to Iranian pro footballers Ali Gholizadeh and Kaveh Rezaei who together scored the game's 3 goals. The team climbed up to fifth place in the Pro League ranking table.
The team is managed by Mehdi Bayat, a French-Iranian businessman born in Tehran and raised in Cannes. Bayat who is also called Robert Bayat, is currently the president of the Royal Belgian Football Association. Mehdi's ancestor Morteza Gholi Bayat was Prime Minister of Iran from 1944 to 1945. His parents had a successful dairy company in Iran. His uncle Abbas Bayat controls the Charleroi. The club dropped to the Second Division in 2012 , but was promoted again a year later. In 2018, Mehdi's brother Mogi was arrested on charges of money laundering and matchfixing.
Some 60 Iranian pro footballers now play in various Asian, European and American football leagues.
