Iran's volleyball team defeated United States volleyball 3-0 in three straight sets as part of FIVB Volleyball Men's Nations League, held May 28 to June 27 in Italy. The 16-team tournament began with a round-robin phase where each side play 15 games.
Iran’s Saber Kazemi scored the match high of 18 points. Garrett Muagututia and Benjamin Patch both scored 12 points for the U.S. in this match.
After losses to Japan and Russia in their first two matches, Iran went on a winning streak and defeated the Netherlands, Canada, host Italy, Bulgaria, and now the United States in five consecutive games.
Currently Iran is only second to France in terms of number of points (five wins out of seven matches), but placed sixth in the overall rankings in terms of set ratios, ahead of powerhouses like U.S., Germany, Russia, Japan and Italy.
In recent years, Iran has been a powerhouse in volleyball and as of 2019 placed eighth globally in FIVB ranking ahead of countries like France, Serbia, Japan, Egypt, The Netherlands, Germany and Australia.
