Iran defeats Spain and US in World Table Tennis Championships (Video)
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: Iran national table tennis team has shown a commendable performance in Men's Division 2 of the 2018 World Team Table Tennis Championships in the western Swedish city of Halmstad. On Wednesday, Iran routed both Spain and Luxembourg 3-0 and on Tuesday edged past the United States 3-2 in Group H of the 2nd Division, after conceding a 2-3 defeat to Kazakhstan the previous day. The team snapped up a 3-0 win against Puerto Rico in its opening match on April 29.
With the wins, Iran clinches the top spot in its group along with other Division 2 leaders Ukraine, Slovakia and Italy. In the Championship Division, Germany, China, Japan and Korea lead the groups.
Separately, Iran women’s national table tennis team defeated Australia 3-0 and Cuba 3-1 in Group G of 2nd Division, and lost 4 other matches.
Iran men's team benefits from the competitive Alamian brothers, Noshad and Nima, respectively ranking 72 and 79 globally. Last month Nima Alamian won a bronze medal at the 2018 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Challenge Spanish Open.
UPDATE, May 6: Iran advances to Division 1 of the World Table Tennis after defeating the Netherlands 3-0 and won Ukraine 3-1 in semi-finals
In group stage, Iran defeated Puerto Rico 3-0 (3-0,3-0,3-0), lost to Kazakhstan 2-3 (3-0,1-3,3-0,2-3,1-3), edged past USA 3-2 (2-3,3-0,0-3,3-1,3-0), defeated Spain 3-0 (3-1,3-2,3-2), and finally beat Luxemburg 3-0 (3-1,3-0,3-1) in its last match.
