Iran's Best Performers in Asian Games
With 13 gold, 21 silver and 20 bronze medals, Iran's sports delegation finished in 7th place in weighted rankings and 9th place in overall number of medals in the 2022 Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China. The current ranking is lower than Iran's 6th, 5th and 4th places in 2018, 2014 and 2010 Asian Games, respectively. Iran's highest ranking was achieved during the 1974 Asian games in Tehran (with 81 medals and second place in the medal count).
The biggest surprise came after Iran’s men’s table tennis team made history by imposing an unexpected humiliating defeat on Japan (seen below) and claiming a bronze medal in the Asian Games (Iran’s first table tennis medal since 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo). Another strong performance came from Faranak Partoazar (pictured above on the right), who won a bronze medal in women's Mountain bike cross-country cycling, the first ever medal won by Iranian women cyclists in Asian Games.
This year, Iran's other best performing sports included wrestling (10 medals), Taekwondo (8 medals), Wushu (7 medals), Kurash (5 medals), Karate and canoeing (each 3 medals).
The 2022 Asian Games was held from 23 September to 8 October 2023 in Hangzhou, China. The games marked the 110th anniversary since the creation of the first continental event, starting with the 1913 Far Eastern Championship Games. Originally scheduled to take place from 10 to 25 September 2022, on 6 May 2022 the Games were postponed to 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
