The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has applauded the Iranian team for stellar performances and its fourth victory in round 1 of men's World Championship (link).
Iran's state-run TV censored scenes of cheerleaders and women spectators but many Iranian women attended the matches in Poland rooting for the Iranian team and even outshouting the few American fans during the US-Iran match (see video below):
Despite the controversial ban on women spectators inside Iran's volleyball stadiums, observers believe volleyball may soon surpass football as Iran's most popular national sport.
After defeating United States, Italy, Belgium and Puerto Rico, and a loss to France, Iran advanced to round 2 and will play against Australia, Argentina, Serbia and the host country (Poland).
