Iranian Americans will cheer wrestling champions in World Cup
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: Two years ago Iranian freestyle wrestlers defended their world Championship title in Los Angeles as they first defeated Americans - in a close match- and then Russians, before an impressively large and loud crowd of Iranian Americans. In 2018, United World Wrestling (UWW) brings the Freestyle World Cup back to the United States April 7-8, 2018, in legendary Carver-Hawkeye Arena on the University of Iowa campus in Iowa City, Iowa.
Update on March 14: Possibility of Iran canceling attendance
Participating in the winner-take-all 2018 team tournament are Iran, USA, Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Japan, Cuba, and Kazakhstan. It is anticipated that 9 of the 10 current individual world champions will be in attendance in this tournament, including Hassan Yazdani Charati from Iran, and Jordan Burroughs and Kyle Snyder from USA.
Carver-Hawkeye Arena has hosted sell out crowds to four NCAA collegiate championships and served as the venue for the USA wrestling team trials in 2012 and 2016. Iowa City set an amateur wrestling attendance record in 2015 in front of 42,287 fans when the University of Iowa topped Oklahoma State University. Iowa City is also hosting the UNESCO Cities of Literature annual meeting the same weekend, with over 40 different countries represented.
In the 1970's, Iran helped US Wrestling Federation train athletes and initiate professional programs across America. An estimated one million Iranian Americans have, regardless of their political backgrounds, historically supported Iranian and American teams in the World Cups. In 2016, the majority of the 4000 seats in THE FORUM were used by loud Iranian American fans who waved flags, blew horns and sang for Iranian team but also cheered for US wrestlers. "We see more Iranians here in Los Angeles than any other City. It’s like wrestling in Tehran," said Iranian 61 kg wrestler Behnam EHSANPOOR (story link).
Kodoom.com has been an official Press partner with USA Wrestling for 2016 and 2018 World Cups.
