Iranian Aryan Gholami Tops Chess Players from Russia, China, India in Shanghai International Open
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: At the end of Round 8 of 2019 Shanghai Cooperation Organization Chess International Open, Two Iranian chess players are ranked in the top 10, including Aryan Gholami who is currently the top scorer in the tournament, ahead of Grandmasters from Russia, China and India.
The 18-year-old Gholami was born in Ghaem Shahr and became Iran's youngest FIDE-ranked chess Grandmaster at the age of eight. When younger, he was into gymnastics but an injury pushed him to focus on the game of chess. He enjoys playing table tennis with his father and is currently an International Master with a FIDE rating of 2542.
In January, Gholami forfeited his chance at winning a $10,000 prize when he ruled out, to comply with Iranian government mandates, playing against Israeli Ariel Erenberg at the Rilton Cup in Sweden. As a result, Commander Soleymani and Iranian Leader Ayatollah Khamenei personally thanked him for his courage in standing with the oppressed (Palestinians).
