Iranian Female Cyclist Makes History: Asian Bronze for Somayeh Yazdani
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: Iranian women are among the most progressive, educated minorities in the Middle East and recently they made history again.
Sommayeh Yazdani's first ever Asian medal for Iranian female cycling team in April was a stellar accomplishment considering that public cycling and bike riding for women is forbidden or frowned upon by conservative Islamic Ayatollahs in Iran, there are few professional practicing areas for women cyclists, and Yazdani wore Hijab (the head cover mandated by Iranian government) and full legging cover during the tournament perhaps raising her body temperature above that of other competitors.
Nicknamed "Rain," Yazdani won a bronze with a time of 03h10'04'' in IRR Women Elite 112 km endurance road event during Asian Road Cycling Championships 2019 held from April 23 to 28 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan’s Olga Zabelinskaya claimed the gold medal, clocking 3:09:05.
500 cyclists from 40 Asian countries competed for 57 sets of medals, as well as for tickets to take part in the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games in Japan.
