Iranian Norwegian Aryan Tari wins World Junior Chess Championship
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: Aryan Tari, a Norwegian Chess Grandmaster of Iranian heritage has won the 2017 FIDE World Junior Under 20 Chess Championships, an 11-round Swiss open that took place in Tarvisio, Italy from 13-25 November 2017.
With his win, Aryan Tari becomes the Chess World Junior Champion. This is an amazing achievement for Aryan since Norway's other Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen is the current World Chess Championis, believed to be the world's most natural and accomplished chess prodigy ever.
Born 1999 in Lier, Norway to immigrant Iranian parents, Tari has played chess since the age of five. His father, Siamak, was a professional chess player in Iran. Together with his wife, Faranak, he has spent countless hours coaching Aryan and about $25000 a year on traveling with Aryan to various tournaments.
For Siamak Tari, one of the reasons for fleeing his homeland was the chance to play chess again. Siamak Tari, born in Tehran, left Iran in 1986, travelling first to Turkey and then after much effort, securing a passage to Norway. The 52-year-old Siamak was a budding chess player during his student days at the University of Tehran. However, after the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the new regime banned chess for a while. After being granted asylum in Norway, Siamak studied computer engineering and then managed to land a job with an energy company. Soon after, he began teaching chess to his sons Abtin and Aryan.
Aryan, is being touted as the next Magnus Carlsen after becoming an International Master (IM) at the age of 14. Interestingly, Aryan managed to secure his first GM norm without earning a single IM norm following a great run in the Norwegian national championship in early 2013. Since then Aryan has received intermittent advice from Magnus Carlsen. “He has spoken to me about being mentally strong and also playing in tournaments where almost everyone is rated higher than me. When I go back home I will show him my games and would like to know what he thinks,” Aryan says.
